Christmas Fare Crabified!

Wondering what to serve your hermit crabs over the Christmas season?

Here we list some tried and tested food items that hermit crabs are known to love.

Hermit Crab-Friendly Popcorn

Why not treat yourself and your hermit crabs at the same time by making some air-popped popcorn rather than purchase the Microwave popcorn or buttered popcorn that is high in oils and fat. You can store it in air-proof jars to save for later, or thread it onto string and decorate your home or crabitat.

To make, simply use a Microwave-safe Popcorn container or an electronic popcorn machine. Remember not to add oil or butter to the hermit crab's portion, but you can sprinkle a little bit of sea salt if desired. An alternative that needs constant supervision is to place a quarter of a cup of popcorn into a brown paper bag. Fold the ends over and secure with tape.

Hermit Crab-Friendly Peanut Butter

Another great idea is to make your own peanut butter. Not only is it more healthy than the store-bought brands but it tastes great! Many health stores have machines to make peanut butter from peanuts, or you can use a blender or processor and make it at home. Store in jars and use lefotvers in your Christmas Cookies or eat it with popcorn as a dip. YUM!

Hermit Crab Friendly Snacks

Hermit Crabs love popcorn and peanut butter, but there are many more snacks that are tasty for both you and your hermit crab. Most are easy to create and will soon become a favourite for kids to prepare.

  • fingers of vegetables or arrot sticks with a peanut butter dip

  • apple rings (dried) with grape 'nose'', currant 'eyes' and a mouth made of other fruit

  • cereal with a dob of peanut butter on a plastic spoon as a quick treat

  • sashimi (raw fish) in thin slices, on roasted seaweed sheets and/or rice and/or lettuce

  • grated apple with sultanas/raisins

  • grapes and other fruits
